1969 Lotus Seven Series 3

Offered for sale is an exceptionally rare and beautifully presented 1969 Lotus Seven Series 3, believed to be one of only three examples in Australia. Of the 230 units ever constructed, this car stands out as a genuine factory-built, drive-away model (not a kit), originally delivered new by Caterham Cars Ltd in September 1969. It was specified with seatbelts, a heater, tonneau cover, and the original Workshop Manual—features that set it apart even further in collector circles.

This Lotus was imported into Western Australia in 1978 and later acquired by Chateau Moteur in Adelaide before being sold to a long-term enthusiast owner who retained it for 15 years. During that period, it saw selective and spirited use in the Adelaide Grand Prix Rally and local hillclimb events, further cementing its motorsport credentials. Today, it presents with a remarkably low indicated mileage of just 33,650 miles—an impressive feat for a car that’s been on the road for over five decades.

Mechanically, this Seven remains in excellent condition. In 1990, the original matching-numbers 1600cc Ford crossflow engine was refreshed, receiving a high-lift camshaft and a fully balanced clutch and tailshaft. The engine, paired with a single Weber carburettor, produces an estimated 120 bhp—more than enough to deliver the exhilarating, lightweight performance the Lotus Seven is famous for. The four-speed close-ratio gearbox was also rebuilt with new bearings, ensuring crisp, confident shifts. A full brake system overhaul, including new cylinders and a slave cylinder, was carried out in January 2017.

The car was originally finished in red but has since been refinished in iconic British Racing Green with a yellow nose band—classic Lotus colours that suit it perfectly. The paintwork is clean, and the vehicle sits proudly on silver-finished steel wheels, complemented by a rollbar and a black tonneau cover. Inside, the cockpit is trimmed in black vinyl with matching carpets, featuring a well-equipped dash, four-point harnesses, and a fire extinguisher. There’s a light patina in the interior consistent with careful use, particularly on the transmission tunnel carpet—adding character without compromising quality.

Included with the car is a comprehensive package of documentation and extras: a Certificate of Provenance from the Lotus factory, the original green-bound Workshop Manual, various historical registration papers, and receipts. Also included are a set of side screens, a spare steering wheel, an aero screen, a rear-view mirror, a set of hubcaps, and other assorted parts.

This 1969 Lotus Seven Series 3 represents an extraordinary opportunity for collectors, historic racers, or weekend driving purists. Whether you’re navigating winding mountain roads, attending club events, or preserving a piece of Lotus history, this car offers a raw and engaging experience that few vehicles can match.
