Delivered new on 15 November 1950 to Bib (Bermak) Stillwell, this Jaguar XK120 left the showroom finished in Birch Grey with Biscuit and Red Duo leather trim and a French Grey soft top, at a purchase price of £1,586 Australian.
From the very beginning, this XK120 proved it was more than just a road car. Its first competitive outing came at Rob Roy in Victoria on 29 January 1951, where it defeated three other XK120s and set a new class record, an extraordinary achievement for a car only months old.
Nearly seventy years later, this early XK120 continues to wear its age with confidence and authenticity. It remains fitted with its original matching-numbers 3.4-litre engine and presents in what can best be described as well-used but deeply cherished condition.
Now thoughtfully prepared for classic rallying, the car benefits from a range of sympathetic competition modifications, including sand-cast SU carburettors with the correct inlet manifold, correct competition aero screens and cowlings, the correct competition mirror cowling, a Wilwood front disc brake conversion, a stainless steel Fab Speed twin exhaust system, a high-output thermo fan kit, twin Williams full harnesses, leather bonnet strap (not currently fitted), spotlights, and heavy-duty wire wheels finished in satin black powder coat.
The paint shows blistering and cracking, the carpets display wear in places, and the leather carries a beautifully aged patina. Yet this honesty only enhances the car’s appeal. It is a wonderfully charismatic XK120 that has clearly had significant expenditure invested in its mechanical upkeep over the years—so much so that the previous owner retained it for an extraordinary 42 years.
